The Mysterious Island (1874)


Jules Verne wrote this classic as a concurrent, companion story to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas.  Verne seemed to have a deep interest in the American Civil War, as many of his stories revolve around this cataclysmic event in American history.  While his stories include the War, they take many liberties with what actually happened, or what the facts really were.  Nevertheless, the novels are great fun...despite the fact there never was a Confederate observation balloon in Richmond in 1865…
