Siddhartha (1922)

May the chakra be with you...

Out of the ashes of war torn Imperial Germany there rose a phoenix...not of brown shirted thugs...but of deep thought, retrospection and a keen interest in all things from the mystical East.  Hermann Hesse, an already established and well-known author, penned this Eastern treat of self-discovery after watching Europe commit virtual suicide in the First War.  Anti-war but patriotic, Hesse served Kaiser and country, but did not subscribe to the frenzy of hate and vitriol stirred up against Germany's enemies.  His even keeled philosophy served him even worse in years to come....he was vocal against the Nazis and the anti-Semitic policies sweeping the Fatherland...which in turn got his work banned by the Third Reich.

The 1922 first edition of Siddhartha is of course...in German...but you can read an English translation at Gutenberg if you don’t speak Deutsch.
