New Atlantis (1627)


The last book…but the beginning of a New World…

Francis Bacon has rightly been called one of the founding fathers of America…both the United States and Canada owe a debt of recognition to this philosopher and Renaissance Man.  His finances and his pen set the stage in motion…and the creation that came forth has evolved into what we in America know today.  This is his last work, unpublished and unfinished within his lifetime…Sir Bacon passed in 1626, New Atlantis was published in 1627.  One could say it is a utopian novel…but is it?  I guess the book is what is, and that resides in the eye of the reader.  One thing is certain, Bacon and his books, which include New Atlantis were very influential in their time…from founding colonies to founding the Royal Society…it even gets a nod from Swift in Gulliver’s Travels.
