Edison’s Conquest of Mars (1898)

Fan fiction…

It didn’t take long…right after Wells' came out with The War of the Worlds, other sequels followed hoping to jump on the wave of popularity.  This is one of the first, a knock off written by Garrett P. Serviss and serialized in The New York Evening Journal.  Leave it to the United States to gear up and take the fight back to the enemy, a theme which has resonated in other science fiction works down through the years and into the present…for example, Harry Turtledove’s Colonization series.  Should you wish more traditional examples, look no farther than The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter or C.A. Powell’s The Last Days of Thunder Child

By the way...Tom Edison had nothing to do with writing the story, which is surprising, seeing as he was a shameless self-promoter...

Here’s the first sequel from 1898, along with the 1947 reprint…check out the illustrations…they are fantastic!
