Arthur Conan Doyle loved the sea. His stories include an accursed ghost ship modeled on the mystery of the Mary Celeste (J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement), and as a young man, he served in a medical capacity aboard a British whaler. It comes as no surprise that he would delve deeply and spin a yarn about the bottom of the sea…and Atlantis. Doyle was a shameless believer in the paranormal…ghosts, fairies, things that go bump in the night, séances and lost civilizations. Doyle was a fun writer and is a fun read. He crafted many of his works around the realm of the fantastic and the unknown. The Maracot Deep is one of those interesting tales and one of his last...it predicts Beebe’s decent in the Bathysphere just a few short years later…I have little doubt that Doyle knew all about Beebe and what he was going to do...
Originally serialized in The Strand, then as its own
stand alone book…it is not available as a first edition scan. You
might find it on eBay…but it’s a bit pricey. Here’s another
choice…albeit not a first edition option, but still readable…
Enjoy!!!
