It’s a prewar story that predestines the coming conflagration and America’s role in the Second World War. Barely one month later, Pearl Harbor will be attacked and decimated by the Japanese, and Germany will declare war on the U.S. two days later. Everyone knew what was coming. Art imitates life…throw in the lost continent of Atlantis and you have a Golden Age of Science Fiction “cheese fest”…complete with all "hokeyness" a copy of Amazing Stories from the early 1940’s can dish out. You can’t beat this kind of entertainment…Nazi submarines streaming forth from an Atlantean hideout at the bottom of the sea!!! It doesn’t get much better than this…
Then again, maybe it does…Ray Bradbury penned a little ditty in 1944, also published in Amazing Stories, about undead, zombie mermaids attacking and destroying Nazi U-boats…it's a delicious piece of WWII pulp fiction…one of the finest…and those German submarines with porthole windows make me smile...
